Welcome to Flourishing Farms
I'm Samantha, the founder, heart, & hands behind this blossoming small business. I'd like to share with you our story and how Flourishing Farms began.
In April of 2023, I embarked on a personal mission to find natural relief for our son's eczema. We had been using topical steroid creams, and while effective, they weren't something we wanted to rely on long-term, especially for our baby's new and delicate skin. With a little prior knowledge mostly about cooking, and direct access to high-quality beef tallow, I felt a strong pull to learn more about the benefits tallow held for skin restoration.
I dove into research and quickly became enthralled by all things tallow, especially its incredible potential to heal, and its amazing compatibility with human skin. Tallow shares a strikingly similar lipid profile to our skin’s natural oils, allowing our cells to recognize its molecular structure and communicate with the skin’s barrier, prompting it to welcome absorption rather than letting it sit on the surface like petroleum-based products do. It works effectively, pulling in and replenishing the exact nutrients the skin needs at that time.
Putting my research into practice, I turned to my in-laws, Mike and Julie. As skilled custom butchers with lifetimes of experience, they helped me hand select the quality tallow I needed to begin refining my skills in rendering and experimenting with my own balm formulations. Family and friends were graciously willing to try everything I handed them, and their honest feedback led to the creation of our beloved Baby Balm, followed by our Tallow Butter and other product variations.
The most rewarding moment, however, was seeing our son’s eczema clear up completely. Our entire family switched solely to tallow, and we have never gone back to conventional moisturizers. Through this journey, my research has continued to grow. I’ve come to understand that ongoing professional research suggests that skin conditions are complex and influenced by many factors, including the gut microbiome. While tallow is not a cure, in our experience and that of several customers, it has been a wonderful, natural resource for promoting skin health and restoration.
As friends and family shared with their close friends and family, I started receiving orders for products. With the encouragement to keep creating, I began formulating additional varieties for our skincare line, and Flourishing Farms’ customer base started to grow. In May of 2024, Flourishing Farms received a grant from Grow Nebraska, a Non-profit Organization that helps new small businesses expand by providing valuable learning and funding opportunities. This was a wonderful blessing that allowed us to construct a separate workspace specifically designed for the production of our skincare line.
Quality matters to us. We source our quality beef tallow from our own home-raised Nebraska beef as well as neighboring Nebraska farms and ranches. All of the beef are harvested on our farm, only a short distance from my workshop, where it is then rendered. Each batch is created using the tallow from only 1 or 2 animals, ensuring its purity and freshness. The tallow is then rendered at a low temperature to ensure the beneficial nutrients remain fully intact while the impurities are carefully extracted.
